A renowned museum just got safer, thanks to Hyfire’s Taurus devices. History is not only the study of the past, it’s a map for the future. Hyfire was recently given the honour of ensuring the safety of some of the world’s most precious artefacts, by installing their wireless fire alarm system in one of the UK’s most important cultural institutions.
In 2023, this museum was the most visited attraction in the UK, with more than 5 million people walking its halls that year alone. This meant installing the devices during the day would be unfeasible without shutting down huge areas of the building, disrupting many visitors’ experience.
Night at the museum: when safety comes to life
To minimise disruption to daily operations, Square Mile Fire and Security, Hyfire’s installation partners, opted to carry out the work outside of operating hours, beginning at 11 PM and continuing through the night.
The project was overseen by Hyfire Regional Sales Manager Gemma Hand, who explained, “The museum remained open throughout the installation. One area was temporarily closed off to allow work to be carried out during the day, but no noisy tasks were performed while the museum was open.”
The real challenge, however, was navigating around ancient artifacts and structures, some over a thousand years old and of immeasurable importance. The museum is home to priceless relics which required special protection during the installation. Therefore, the team installed sensors to monitor vibrations in their vicinity. “If the sensors detected any vibration – explains Gemma Hand – work would immediately stop, allowing museum staff to inspect the artifact before we could proceed.”
The Taurus Wireless system sets a new standard for integrating heritage preservation with modern safety requirements. A key advantage of Hyfire’s Taurus system is its flexibility. Additionally, the system’s long operational life, up to 10 years on a single set of batteries for detectors and call points, significantly reduces maintenance demands while ensuring continuous, reliable protection. By implementing a hybrid fire detection system, the museum safeguards both its historic building and the well-being of its artifacts.
